We have never been a big fan of 3D-capable consumer devices. We became even more skeptical when smartphone manufacturers started releasing handsets to the market which boast of glasses-free 3D displays. That being said, I tried to keep an open mind when I first came face to face with the HTC EVO 3D. Did the handset change the way I look at 3D-capable devices? Maybe. Maybe not. It is just a good thing that the HTC EVO 3D has a lot more to offer aside from its 3D display.
At first glance, the HTC EVO 3D establishes the fact that it is a gorgeous handset. It is decked-out in a black colorway with red accents but doesn’t look like the usual Android-powered smartphone we see lining up the shelves today. The handset has dimensions of 126 x 65 x 12.1 mm and tips the scales at 170 grams.
The handset is not as slim as other smartphones from the competition but it doesn’t feel bulky at all. It is pretty obvious that the HTC EVO 3D is solidly built and its textured back panel feels very good in the hand. The top edge of the handset is home to the HTC EVO 3D’s power / lock button and its 3.5 audio jack. The left edge on the other hand houses the handset’s combo microUSB / HDMI port while the right side contains the device’s volume rocker in addition to its 2D / 3D mode switch. The bottom edge of the device contains the handset’s mic pinhole.
To power the operation of the HTC EVO 3D, the handset relies on a QualComm MSM8660 SnapDragon chipset to run the helm from the circuit board. This SoC chipset gives the device a dual-core 1.2GHz Scorpion processor which comes up with the needed computing power of the handset in addition to a dedicated Adreno 220 graphics chip which is tasked to provide graphical muscle to the HTC EVO 3D.
The HTC EVO 3D’s processor is supported by a full gigabyte of RAM and this pair is very efficient in running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, not to mention capable of delivering a snappy performance almost all the time. Sadly, the HTC EVO 3D only comes with 1GB of internal memory but no worries really, since this is still expandable through the use of the handset’s dedicated microSD card slot.
The display of the HTC EVO 3D is a 4.3-inch 3D LCD capacitive touchscreen which boasts of a qHD resolution of 540 x 960 pixels. With the handset’s SnapDragon processor in play, the device is capable of packing support for advanced 3D technology which includes 1080p HD videos at 30fps and capture and playback of stereoscopic 3D video. As for its camera department, the HTC EVO 3D boasts of a dual-5MP autofocus shooters at its back panel paired with a front-facing 1.3MP video chat camera.
The HTC EVO 3D draws power from a standard 1730 mAh Li-Ion battery which gives the handset a standby time of up to 420 hours and talk time of up to 7 hours and 45 minutes, both in 3G mode until the juice of the handset gets fully squeezed out.
