When we first heard about the Samsung galaxy S II at last year’s Mobile World Congress, we were left wanting for more. Thankfully, the handset also made its way to US shores where Sprint offered it as the Samsung Epic 4G Touch. Sprint’s version of the handset is without a doubt one of the most attention-grabbing smartphones and is definitely one of the best Android-powered handsets to hit the market.
The Samsung Epic 4G Touch is definitely a looker but with its dimensions of 130 x 70 x 10 mm, the handset is for people with big claws. The smartphone packs the conventional black-slab design and is fashioned mostly from plastic. Be aware though that the plastic used in its construction is of the high-quality type. The handset tips the scales at 130 grams and is able to convey the impression of being a solidly-built device despite its mostly plastic construction.
The back panel of the Samsung Epic 4G Touch features a textured back panel and still has the same bump found below the battery cover as that of the original Galaxy S II. Looking at its top edge, we see the 3.5 mm headphone jack of the handset while the left flank houses its volume rocker. Moving over to the right flank of the Samsung Epic 4G Touch, we see the power / lock button of the device and down at its bottom edge is where the microUSB charging port resides.
Underneath the hood, the Samsung Epic 4G Touch packs the same internals found in the original Galaxy S II where an Exynos chipset gives the handset a dual-core 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor and 1GB of RAM which is responsible for the handset’s snappy performance. Atop the chipset, we also see the handset’s Mali-400MP graphics chip which is tasked in taking care of graphical concern.
As for its storage space, the Samsung Epic 4G Touch’s 16GB of internal memory assures you that the handset has the space needed for all your multimedia files. If the onboard storage of the handset gets depleted, the Samsung Epic 4G Touch features a microSD card slot that handles media cards of up to 32GB so you can beef up the internal memory of the device.
As for its display, despite bumping up its screen real estate to a diagonal of 4.52 inches, the Samsung Epic 4G Touch’s SuperAMOLED Plus display is still capable of delivering the same well-saturated colors and the deepest blacks that are almost at par with the iPhone’s Retina display. This despite still packing the same WVGA resolution of 480 x 800 pixels similar to the Galaxy S II’s slightly smaller 4.3-inch display of the same type.
The shooting department of the Samsung Epic 4G Touch is pretty much the same as that of the Galaxy S II. The rear shooter of the handset snaps images with an impressive 8-megapixel resolution while its front snapper can turn out images with an equally impressive 2-megapixel resolution aside from being used as a video chat camera. The Samsung Epic 4G Touch edges out the Galaxy S II though in terms of battery life with the handset’s 1800 mAh power pack giving it a standby time of up to 252 hours and talk time of up to 8 hours and 45 minutes.
The Samsung Epic 4G Touch from Sprint is definitely one of the must-have devices with its top-notch performance and beautiful display. And with the host of connectivity options that the handset packs, you can never go wrong with the Samsung Epic 4G Touch.
